For the first time in the history, the Hawaii Warriors outright won the WAC title with a thrilling 39 - 27 over nemesis Boise State. It was a moment 28 years in the making and leaves the Warriors at 11-0 with one regular season game remaining and keeping the dream of a unbeaten season with a BCS game alive.
Colt Brennan passed for 495 yard and 5 touchdowns and slotback Davone Bess caught a school record 15 of those passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Warriors to victory. Brennan’s first touchdown pass broke Ty Detmers career TD passes record at 122. Brennan would then build on that to 126 career TD passes with still one regular season and one bowl game left.
There seems to be some magic in the air for the beginning Haka performed by the Warriors to the 50,000+ fans waving green Ti leaves and hoisting Colt Brennan for Heisman, We Belive and BCS signs in the air. Boise State and Ian Johnson struck first on a 50 yard TD run and Colt lead the Warriors right back with a TD pass to Ryan Grice-Mullen. Hawaii led at the half 19-17. After an interception by Colt Brennan Boise State moved ahead 27-26 on a Kyle Brotzman 37 yard field goal.
But from then on with the full moon rising the the sky the magic would not be denied. Two more TD passes for Colt to Jason Rivers and C.J. Hawthorne would lead UH to a 39-27 victory and 50,000 happy fans chanting BCS and wondering if this is the team of destiny. We will find out in the weeks to come.
