The Leafy Seadragon is one of the more unusual exhibits at the Waikiki Aquarium. It is part of the Syngnathidae family that includes seadragons, pipefish and seahorses.  It is found only in the chilly Southern Australian and Tasmanian waters.  They have distinctive tubular jaws that open rapidly to suck in prey. They incubate their eggs on their bodies holding clutches of eggs between modified fins. Like seahorses it is the males that brood the eggs after receiving them from the females. It is very challenging to maintain this exhibit. The seadragons are fed live mysis shrimp by hand 2-4 times a day.
