We continue our Midsummer Night’s Gleam series with these glow in the dark rocks. One of the nice things about a night event at the Foster Botanical Gardens is the darkness allows for different experiences. Here is a collection of glowing rocks on display. These are calcite and some other similar minerals that look glow under the dark light. This is caused by a physical property knows as “fluorescence” where these rocks absorb a small amount of light and later release them in a different wavelength. This causes a temporary color change in the mineral that we see.
