Today we feature the Polynesian double hulled voyaging canoe Hikianalia.  This is the younger “sister” to the more famous Hokule’a. She is wider, longer and bulkier and just two years old and will be the escort canoe on the voyage. Hikianalia is named fora  companion star that rises in the Hawaii sky with the Hokule’a star. She will be the safety, medical and science platform of the voyage. This will be the second major trip for her.  Solar panels will generate electricity used to power lights as well as radio and science components. She also has electric motors that can be used in event of emergencies. Today (May 15, 2014) is the final day of the open house where you can see the boats up close and talk to some of those who will be making the journey. This free open house is at 4-7pm at the Marine Educations and Training Center (METC) at 10 Sand Island Parkway (first right after crossing the bridge).
