Here the view overlooking Kawai Nui Marsh. This is the upper part that is within the Kawai Nui Marsh Reserve.  In 2005 the area was designated as a Ramsar Convention Wetland of International Importance.  This is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands. Below is a panoramic shot thought the lighting isn’t as good as I would have liked. I’ll have to go back on a nice and sunny afternoon.

Here is a shot of part of the Kawai Nui Marsh. It is over 800 acres and the largest wetlands in Hawaii.  The name Kawai Nui means “the big water” in Hawaiian. It is believe that it was once a hug body of water. Today it is largely covered in plants growing on the water and meadows.  A wide variety of birds make their homes here in this scenic windward Oahu site.

Here is a photo of the Hokulani Imaginarium on the campus of Windward Community College. This is a high tech planetarium and multi-media facility. Hokulani translates in Hawaiian to “starry Heavens.” The theater has a 40 foot dome and 66 seats each equipped with an interactive control panel so the audience can actively participate in the program.  It uses a Digistar II projector that can create the illusion of motion as well as 3D images and modeling. For more information and public showing see the Hokulani Imaginium page here.
