Here is the famous Hitachi tree at Moanalua Gardens. It is a large monkeypod tree with a distinctive umbrella shaped canopy and is registered with the city as an exceptional tree that cannot be removed or destroyed without city council approval. The Japanese electronics firm Hitachi has used it as their corporate logo since 1973. The revenue generated by the exclusive worldwide rights of the tree’s i8mage for promotion purposes partly fund the upkeep of Moanalua Gardens.

While going for a walk in Moanalua Botanical Gardens I came across this pretty red flower.  I believe it is part of the Ixora Coccinea (jungle geranium) family which is native to Southern India and Sri Lanka. If anybody knows for sure let me know. Just an FYI Moanalua Botanical Gardens now has a $3 entry free ($1 for Kama’aina).

One last shot of the Fourth of July Fireworks display.  For me there is always something magical watching a fireworks display. By the way if you are in Hawaii and want to practice fireworks photography the Hilton Hawaiian launches a short display most Fridays at around 7:45pm and it is visible for free from the Diamond Head (Waikiki) side of Magic Island.
