Here is a sail made of pandanus.  In Hawaii sails were made from band of plaited lau hala strips that were sticked together and attached to the mast. The lau hala is the left from the Pandanus tree and many pacific cultures uses it to weave items such as baskets, mats, hats and sails. The ropes used to attach these sails were made from the fibrous husk of coconuts.
