For Memorial Day I continued my tradition of going to Lantern Floating Hawaii at Ala Moana Beach Park / Magic Island. This year over 50,000 people attended and watched 6,000 candle lit lanterns set afloat in remembrance of loved ones who have passed. This lantern you see being held aloft will soon enter the water with the thousands already launched. If you haven’t been there in person you should make an effort to brave the crowds. It is just an amazing feeling watching the lanterns float out into the ocean and pausing to remember those who have passed.

Time to close out the week with the Kaiwo Maru Japanese tall ship at sunset. For my regular readers you’ll notice this is the same location of many of my sunset photos but as an extra added bonus I managed to change the angle slightly to get the tall ship into the photo.

One of the advantage of working downtown right next to Honolulu Harbor is you can see all sorts of boats visiting Hawaii. Here is the Kaiwo Maru which is a Japanese four masted training barque tall ship. It was built in 1989 and is 361 feet long and 45 feet high. In March of 2011 she was on a voyage to Japan to Honolulu when the Fukushima earthquake and tsunami struck Japan. She was rerouted to Fukushima and served as accomodations for works talking the nuclear crisis. Here is some additional photos and information from our coverage of Kaiwo Maru’s last visit.  You can view this boat by Aloha Tower through Saturday 5/23/15.
