Here is one of the polar bear’s at the Oregon Zoo. The bear’s white or yellowish coat (also known as pelage) helps to camouflage it from its prey. It lies on the ice waiting for a seal to pop up a breathing hole and become dinner. Polar bears main food is ringed, bearded, harp and hooded seals. In the summer the supplement their diet with berries, crab and rodents. At the Oregon zoo there is a brother and sister pair (Conrad and Tasul) who were born on Dec 1, 1984. I’m not 100% sure but I believe this photo is of Tasul. Their zoo diet includes beef fat, fish, carrots, apples, bones and a wide variety of enrichment treats. The zoo is currently planning a new, larger polar bear habitat. Sadly the worldwide population of twenty to twenty five thousand polar bears is declining due to the warming and melting of sea ice. The find out more on how to help visit our friends at Polar Bears International.
