We continue our brief journey at the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens stopping to look these beautiful Pineapple Ginger Flowers.  Also known as the Indonesian Wax Ginger or Tapeinochilos Ananassae this flower is native to Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea and Australia. The stiff waxy long lasting flowers are sometimes seen in tropical flower arrangements. The flower is unrelated to the pineapple plant but got its name because its red bracts (or petals) look like an upside down pineapple.

Today  we begin a series of photos at the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens out in central Oahu. I only got to spend a short time there so sometime in the future I need to spend more time there. Here is what I believe is the blue ginger flower. I love the contrast with the purple blue flower and the lush green of the ferns behind it. The botanical garden is 27 acres and is open from 9am to 4pm daily (except Christmas and New Years). There is no admission charge.

At halftime of the Moanalua vs Aiea football game we were entertained by the Moanalua High School Marching Band. The band is one of the largest in the state (240+ members) and is considered one of the best. They perform at the homecoming football game as well as in state marching band festivals and the Aloha Week Parade. They have also performed at the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, Orange Bowl Parade, World Fair, Osaka Midosuji Parade, World Expo and the International Youth Festival. All in all good night I got to spend with friends and watching the great marching band as well as a victory for the football team. I also got a tour of the new band room.
