This is the spotted freshwater Stingray. They are related to sharks since both have skeletons made of cartilage. The stingrays flattened body shape allows it to cover itself with sandy or muddy sediment to become nearly invisible. They eat mostly small crustaceans, fish and molluscs.  They are also pretty photogenic and tend to stay still a lot making photos pretty easy. Also note while common in many rivers and mangroves in South America these are illegal in Hawaii to protect our freshwater habitats.
