For Earth Day 2014 I went to the Mauka to Makai expo at Waikiki Aquarium. They had many booths that explored the environment and how to recycle and conserve resources and be green. As you visited the booths you stamped your passport and I traded in that for this Earth Day gift. This is the Na’u (Gardenia brighamii) which is Hawaii’s endemic gardenia. It was common in dry lowland forests of all islands in the 1900s but today only a handful of trees exist in the wild mostly on Lanai. Today you can find it at some botanical gardens or in the yards of native Hawaiian plant enthusiasts. I’ll do my best to keep this one alive and help bring back this native plant from the threat of extinction.
