Today we begin a quick look at the Ni’ihau Shell Lei: Ocean Origins, Living Traditions exhibit at the Bishop Museum. This runs through April 14, 2014 so this is your last chance to go to the museum and check out this unique exhibit.  Here is the shell drape which is mostly strung as lei kui pololei and made of various momi shells. It is likely this was once displayed in the Waikiki home of Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole and Princess Kahanu. This was made in the late 1800s or early 1900s and were commonly used to decorate doorways or display over mantels.
