One of the more interesting parts of the radio room tour was a look at the SCR-578 which was affectionately called the “Gibson Girl” since to use it you sat like how girls sat in the artwork of Charles Gibson. Our guide Mark (below) demonstrated use where in your life raft you would sit with this between your legs, launch the kite and turn the generator handle which would send a morse code distress signal. This is not as easy as you would think as the box weights 34 pounds. Hopefully there is at least one other person in the raft with you as one can only crank for so long. Of course today we have electronic automatic beacons in liferafts but its neat to see what was used back in the World War II days.
