Hi Dave, it looked to me like a shadow was cast upon the sky because you can still see the clouds in the darker portion of the pic. After confirmation with the National Weather Service, we agree that it might be sun rays or sun beams. Without looking at the source of the shadow myself, that's the best guess.

[...] This weekend is the annual Dragon Boat Races at Ala Moana Beach Park. It will run on Saturday June 19 and Sunday June 20. See Dragon Boat Race schedule. Teams will race through the waters just off shore to grab the flag and win the race. This festival which originated in China is supposed to drive off evil spirits and pestilence. If you haven’t seen it in person it is a sight to see. You can also see some of our pictures from last years race on the Global Hawaii Blog.
I really want to go to this event one of these years. This year we had a 60th Anniversary celebration to attend so couldn't make it -- maybe next year! I've heard it's amazing to see!

Thanks for your comment Linda. That looks like an interesting book you have. I have added the book to our Amazon widget so our Global Hawaii customers will see it as a book they can purchase from Amazon. I'm glad there are people like you telling the stories of the Hawaiian culture.

My research for my historical novel, Wai-nani, High Chiefess of Hawaii, set in Hawaii during Kamehameha's rise to power included a lengthy stop at the Bishop Museum. There is a sketch on the back wall of Ka'ahumanu, the favorite wife of the great warrior who united the Islands. She was the inspiration for the heroine of my story - Wai-nani.
